High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A combustor is a component or area of a gas turbine, ramjet, or scramjet engine where combustion takes place. It is also known as a burner or flame can. In a gas turbine engine, the main combustor or combustion chamber is fed high pressure air by the compression system and feeds the hot, higher pressure exhaust into the turbine components of the engine. In ramjet/scramjet designs, the combustor exhaust is fed directly to the nozzle. Combustors are designed to contain and control the combustion of the fuel-air mixture. The combustor consists of several major components and those components can be incorporated into three major types of combustor, can, can-annular or cannular, and annular. Afterburners are often considered another type of combustor. Combustors play a crucial role in many engine characteristics, including the fuel efficiency of the engine and the level of emissions emitted by the engine.
