High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Compute Node Linux (CNL) is a runtime environment based on the Linux kernel for the Cray XT3, Cray XT4 and Cray XT5 supercomputer systems based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. CNL forms part of the UNICOS/lc operating system from release 2.0 onwards (UNICOS/lc was later renamed Cray Linux Environment). As of November 2008 systems running CNL are ranked 2nd, 7th and 8th among the fastest supercomputers. The Linux kernel is an operating system kernel used by the Linux family of Unix-like operating systems. It is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software. The Linux kernel is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), (plus some firmware images with various licenses), and is developed by contributors worldwide. Day-to-day development takes place on the Linux kernel mailing list.
