It is found in grasslands and forest margins up to the subalpine zone. Coprosma rugosa bears small purple-white berries in autumn, the seed of which is widely dispersed by birds. It is considered a very hardy shrub and is suitable for edging. Rubiaceae is a family of flowering plants, variously called the madder family, bedstraw family or coffee family. Other common plants included are gardenia, cinchona (whose bark contains quinine), sweet woodruff, partridgeberry, gambier, ixora, and noni.
