Corrosion of rebar is the prevalent cause of deterioration of concrete structures leading to costly repairs, road closures, or worse; premature failure. In this book corrosion resistant rebar materials such as solid (and clad) stainless steel are compared to carbon steel. Testing was conducted to evaluate the corrosion initiation and propagation behavior as well as to indentify critical materials issues that impact each. Initiation behavior is fairly well studied however the propagation phase is often overlooked even though it is corrosion products at the rebar surface that causes cracking. This is critically important since new materials are expected to behave drastically different than carbon steel. The key question is whether or not the higher upfront cost of corrosion resistant rebar is justified over the lifetime of a structure. Such information may be helpful for bridge designers, traffic and civil engineers as well as professionals and researchers in materials science interested in reducing the costs of corrosion. Since one cannot change the environmental conditions which enable corrosion it is worth considering rebar materials with an inherently higher corrosion resistance.
