High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In cryptozoology and (to a lesser degree) cryptobotany, a cryptid is a creature or plant whose existence has been suggested but that is unrecognized by a scientific consensus, and whose existence is moreover often regarded as highly unlikely. Noted cryptids include Bigfoot, Yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster. The term was coined by John E. Wall in a 1983 letter to the International Society of Cryptozoology newsletter. However, 'cryptid' was used in the late 19th century and early 20th century to describe some genus of Hymenoptera insects.
