Crystal Tools is a game engine created and used exclusively by Japan-based gaming company Square Enix. Originally titled the "White Engine", its name was changed during development of Final Fantasy XIII, the first title to ever use the Crystal Tools engine.The engine was originally created for use with the PlayStation 2 platform, and was developed during the production of the first title it was used with, Final Fantasy XIII, itself originally intended to be released on the PlayStation 2. When the developers saw the advantages of the PlayStation 3 system, the company decided to create the engine for use with seventh-generation consoles; the developers have stated that the hurdles were bigger moving from the PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 3 than moving from the PlayStation 1 to the PlayStation 2.
