Affairs, the Cultural Properties of Japan are tangible properties (shrines, temples, other structures, statues, paintings, craft items, examples of calligraphy) and intangible properties (performing arts and craft techniques) created or developed in Japan in the course of its history, plus natural landscapes in Japan unchanged by time. Considered by the Japanese government to be a precious legacy of the Japanese people, they are as such protected under the Japanese Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties. To protect Japan's cultural heritage, the country's government has established with the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties a "designation system" under which it selects important items and designates them as Cultural Properties, imposing restrictions to their alteration, repair and export.
