It is awarded to a living author for lifetime achievement in science fiction and/or fantasy. Officially, it is not a Nebula Award though it is awarded at the Nebula ceremony. It was originally known as the Grand Master Award, but in 2002 it was renamed in honor of the late Damon Knight, a founder of the SFWA.
