High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Derf is the pseudonym of American artist John Backderf, most famous for the comic strip The City, which has appeared in a number of alternative newspapers since 1990. In 2006 Derf won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning.Backderf grew up in Richfield, Ohio, a small farm town south of Cleveland and attended high school with future serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, which he later recounted in his comic book My Friend Dahmer. This work was praised as being of "genuine interest and quality" after being selected for inclusion by Paul Gravett in Holy Sh*t! The World's Weirdest Comic Books. Following a brief stint at art school, Derf worked for a year on the back of a garbage truck, an experience that was the basis for his graphic novel, Trashed. Both My Friend Dahmer and Trashed were nominated for Eisner Awards.
