Aerosols are important in engineering of nanoparticles through spray drying, atmospheric science, air pollution, drug delivery to lungs, industrial hygiene, and fuel combustion. A valid mathematical modeling and computer codes for multicomponent droplet evaporation/condensation have been developed for the coupled mass and heat transport moving boundary problem. The simulations demonstrate the evolution of droplet size and the inhomogeneities in compositions and temperature. Aerosol-assisted evaporation-induced self-assembly has been applied to fabricate a wide range of nanoparticle architectures. Nanoporous silica with single crystal NaCl core has been prepared. The simulation proves the formation mechanism. Photo-controlled release is realized by trans/cis isomerization of azobenzene moieties. Ordered core-shell Ce/SiO2 particles are made for corrosion inhibition of aluminum alloys. A strategy is proposed for long term protection. Nano Ag composite, hollow spheres, drug capsules, and high surface area oxides have been attentively made by various engineering controls for disinfection, drug delivery, adsorption, heavy metal removal, and catalysis.
