Over the last couple of decades, significant advances have been made towards the successful description of various characteristics of the atomic nuclei using the nuclear shell model. Still, many phenomena remain unexplained in large part because even the best of modern computational capabilities cannot handle the required huge model spaces. One way to deal with this large-space issue is provided through algebraic models that are based on the symmetries nuclei possess. In this work, an extended SU(3) shell model that for the first time explicitly includes the unique-parity intruder levels is introduced. The relevance of the model is established through calculations for a group of upper fp-shell nuclei that play a key role in nucleosynthesis processes in the Universe. This algebraic approach allows one to better probe the effects of deformation and account for the key properties of systems within highly truncated model spaces. The book should be of interest to nuclear physicists, as well as to individuals facing similar computational challenges in other fields of science.
