There is a continuous search for new plant compounds with beneficial effects on human health. One group of these compounds that has considerably drawn attention of researchers in recent years are natural antioxidants. The Andean region in Soth America is well known for its great genetic diversity in different types of crops, which unfortunately have poorly been studied. People from the Andean region have utilized tree tomato (Solanum betaceum) for its nutritional and medicinal properties since ancient times. It is thought that the health-related properties of this Andean crop could be in part attributed to the antioxidants present in this crop. However, little is know about the chemical nature and identity of the bioactive compounds present. The main objective of this study was to provide new data regarding tree tomato as a source of antioxidant compounds and compare it with other comercial crops. The information obtained should stimulate an increase in the evaluation and conservation of fruits in the Andean region and in the identification of these crops as new sources of functional foods.
