The album was released on March 25, 2011 by Jive Records (Sony Music). Recorded between 2009 and 2011, the album featured Spears working mainly alongside longtime collaborators Max Martin and Dr. Luke, who served as the executive producers of the album. The producers confirmed they and Spears were all working on some material for the release of the album following her 2009 world tour. Wanting to stray away sonically from her previous material, Spears experimented with various styles of dance music including dubstep, which was used in various songs on the album.
