The human pelvis frequently sustains injury or bone fractures due to automobile accidents, presence of bone metastases and osteoporosis. In recent decades, finite element (FE) method has been used a powerful tool in study of pelvic biomechanics. Previous FE models of the pelvis contain only bony structure, the articular joints like pubic symphysis, however, are often simplified or not modeled. Accurate representation of pelvic biomechanics necessitates use of biofidelic pelvis models. This book introduces methods to develop and validate advanced pelvic models from medical image data containing both bone and soft tissues. The FE models are then used to study deformation characteristics of the pubic symphysis, pelvic bone stresses, and injury mechanisms under side impacts; and to investigate how the presence of periacetabular defects and subsequent cement filling affect pelvic bone stresses and hip contact pressure in single stance loads. The methodologies used in this book may help biomechanics researcher and automobile safety engineer in development of advanced human body model to better understand the injury mechanism and tolerances under various loading conditions.
