Fox hunting legislation refers to various laws and legislative history related to fox hunting in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.Hunting has been regulated for many centuries, most often for the benefit of the upper class. The word "paradise", for example, comes from a Greek word for enclosed Persian gardens, where only royalty were allowed and only royals could hunt. In more modern times, hunting regulations have been encouraged by the conservation and animal welfare movements out of concern for wildlife management and alleged cruelty.Several UK laws on animal welfare, such as the Protection of Animals Act 1911, the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 contained specific exemptions for hunting activities, thereby preventing prosecutions of hunts for activities that might otherwise have been considered cruel.
