On 14 February 1809, sailing North of Corfu under frigate captain Paulin, she was chased by HMS Belle Poule. Var retreated to Vlore, hoping that the forts of the harbour would aid her; support did not come, however, and Var was captured the next day. Paulin was acquitted of blame for the loss of his ship on 16 April 1814. Var was brought into British service as HMS Chichester.
