adult education - of English as a foreign language, vocational training, or courses for personal fulfilment. The author captures our attention with a dazzling array of new methodology. The days of the long-distance lecture are clearly over! Here, we`re in a world of video aids, interaction, colour, IT, proxemics, classroom layout, continuous feedback, assessment and reinforcement. Exams are of course kept in focus, but the teacher`s role as `good shepherd` to his/her flock of learners is made paramount. With a glossary, bibliography and a useful guide to FENTO requirements, Fundamentals of Teaching... is a must for FE teachers and a handy compass for those considering a career in Tertiary education. A chartered surveyor, David began teaching on RICS courses in the late 1980`s moving on to become Course Director for the Built Environment Degree Foundation year offered by South Bank University. After obtaining teaching qualifications and a Dip. Ed from the University of Sussex, David`s interests became more specialised on the needs of learners who were studying in English, not their native language. This led to a formal TEFL qualification from ITTC Bournemouth and to further research into teaching methodologies completed at London City College, Schiller International University and while working in Moscow, Siberia, Switzerland and France. This was followed by work with DfES on Key Skills and Basic Level Literacy and with City & Guilds on various teaching qualifications; his current portfolio includes devising courses and teacher-training methodologies for students in Ireland, Somalia, France, Kenya and Bulgaria as well as in the United Kingdom. He and his wife Barbara live in Kent.
