Born in Watford to Scottish parents, Tomlinson grew up in Keighley in West Yorkshire. As a youth Tomlinson signed for his local side Bradford City and made his first-team debut on 5 March 1994, as a substitute against Blackpool. He soon attracted interest and was signed by Manchester United in 1994 for a fee of 500,000, but he only ever played one game for the club—as a substitute against Port Vale in the Football League Cup during the 1994–95 season.
