High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A ground proximity warning system is a system designed to alert pilots if their aircraft is in immediate danger of flying into the ground or an obstacle. The United States Federal Aviation Administration defines GPWS as a type of terrain awareness warning system. More advanced systems, introduced in 1996, are known as enhanced ground proximity warning system, although sometimes confusingly labeled with the terrain awareness warning system term. In the late 1960s, a series of controlled flight into terrain accidents killed hundreds of people.
