High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Hardcard is a brand name for the first hard-drive-on-a-card released in October 1985, by Plus Development, Corporation, a subsidiary of Quantum Corporation. Hardcard combines a hard drive controller with the hard disk drive itself on a plug in card. The resulting device fits into an expansion slot inside a personal computer, without using a drive bay. By June 1986, there were 28 competitors producing similar hard-drive-on-a-card products. The term has been used generically to refer to any hard disk on a card. Plus Development was started in 1983 as a subsidiary of Quantum Corp. and spent the first two years creating Hardcard with a 10 Megabyte capacity selling initially for $1,095. The focus was to create an easy to install hard drive that average computer owners could add to their personal computers without assistance from a technician. In the mid-1980s, hard drives were as small as 1.6 inches tall, but in order to fit into a single ISA PC card expansion slot a custom one-inch thick hard drive had to be designed. Having spent $15 million on the project, Plus Development started shipping Hardcard in October 1985.
