High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Hardware obfuscation is a technique by which the description or the structure of electronic hardware is modified to intentionally conceal the functionality of the hardware. In essence, it is different from digital watermarking, or from hardware intellectual property watermarking where the ownership information is concealed in the behavior of the circuit, but little effort is made to conceal the actual functionality of the circuit. It is also different from cryptography-based IP protection techniques common in field programmable gate array based design methodologies. The importance of the techniques of hardware watermarking has increased in the recent years due to the widespread adoption of hardware IP based design practices for cutting edge integrated circuits such as system on chips. This is because of three main threats: hardware intellectual property infringement from the SoC design houses and/or their associates; the possibility of reverse engineering the IC design database in fabrication facilities or the manufactured ICs themselves to produce counterfeit ICs.
