The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was opened with an enrollment of 379 students in the fall of 1945. It opened as the College of Engineering until it was changed to school on February 21, 1969. The School now has seven academic departments and a total enrollment of more than 5,000 students. It is among the top 10 public engineering schools in the United States. The School offers 28 academic and professional degree programs, including an interdepartmental graduate degree program in biomedical engineering, and is also home to eight major externally funded multimillion-dollar interdisciplinary research centers, in space exploration, wireless sensor systems, nanotechnology, nanomanufacturing and nanoelectronics, as well as many other multidisciplinary ventures.
