HMAS Encounter was a second-class protected cruiser of the Challenger class of the Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Encounter was laid down for the RN by HM Dockyard at Devonport in Plymouth on 28 January 1901. The ship was launched on 18 June 1902, and completed on 21 November 1905. She was transferred to the RAN in 1912 as a training cruiser, pending the completion of HMAS Brisbane, and was commissioned into the RAN on 1 July.
