HMCS Algonquin was a V-Class World War II destroyer, laid down for the Royal Navy as HMS Valentine (R17) and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy on completion. In 1954, Algonquin was converted to a Type 15 frigate at Esquimalt Dockyard. Finally paid off 1 April 1970. The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom is the oldest of HM Armed Forces (and is therefore known as the Senior Service).
