Named after Kokanee Lake in southeastern British Columbia, she was laid down on 25 August 1943 at Yarrows Ltd., Esquimalt and launched on 27 November 1943. She was commissioned into the RCN with pennant number K419 on 6 June 1944 at the Esquimalt naval base.
