She was built by Vickers Armstrong, Barrow and launched on the 15 March 1934. She had an eventful career in the Second World War, serving across the world. In May 1940, she was operating off the Scandinavian coast, where she attacked the German armed merchant cruiser Widder but was driven off. In June of that year, she spotted and torpedoed the German battlecruiser Gneisenau, hitting her in the bow and forcing her to return to Trondheim for repairs.
