High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! HMS Elizabeth was a 38-gun fourth rate frigate of the English Royal Navy, built by Peter Pett I at Deptford Dockyard and launched in 1647. The term 'frigate' during the period of this ship referred to a method of construction, rather than a role which did not develop until the following century. Elizabeth was burnt by the Dutch in 1667. The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom is the oldest of HM Armed Forces (and is therefore known as the Senior Service). From the beginning of the 18th century until well into the 20th century it was the most powerful navy in the world, playing a key part in establishing the British Empire as the dominant world power from 1815 until the early 1940s.
