High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! HMS Hastings was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She was built in Calcutta for the Honourable East India Company, but purchased by the Royal Navy on 22 June 1819. In 1855 she was fitted with screw propulsion, and was sold out of the navy in 1886. The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom is the oldest of HM Armed Forces (and is therefore known as the Senior Service). From the beginning of the 18th century until well into the 20th century it was the most powerful navy in the world, playing a key part in establishing the British Empire as the dominant world power from 1815 until the early 1940s.
