Launched prior to the First World War, she was attached to the Harwich Force and served in the North Sea. Loyal saw action in several engagements, including the Battle off Texel. Loyal was laid down as HMS Orlando before being renamed. She was constructed by William Denny and Brothers and launched on 11 November 1913.
