The ship is most famous for her escape from Surabaya, Java in 1942, disguised as a tropical island. Abraham Crijnssen was laid down on 21 March 1936 at Gusto shipyards in Schiedam, launched on 21 March 1943, and commissioned into the RNN on 27 May 1937. She was the third of eight Jan van Amstel class minesweepers, and was named after the 17th century naval commander Abraham Crijnssen.
