High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A homology in chemistry refers to a chemical compound from a series of compounds that differ only in the number of repeated structural units. A homolog is a special case of an analog. Examples are alkanes and compounds with alkyl functional groups that differ in the length of their sidechain or a peptide with one amino acid replaced by another. On the periodic table, homologous elements share many chemical properties. and appear vertically in the same group of the table. For example, all noble gases are colorless, monatomic gases with very low reactivity. These similarities are due to similar structure in their outer shells of valence electrons.
