Debbie was the fourth tropical cyclone of the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season, and developed from a weather system near Cape Verde on September 6. While passing near the Cape Verde Islands, the storm was blamed for a plane crash that killed 60 people. After becoming a tropical cyclone, Debbie intensified into a hurricane six hours later. Over the next five days, Debbie maintained its intensity while moving generally west-northwestward over the open ocean. On September 11, the system turned northward and finally intensified further, ultimately reaching Category 3 status that day. On September 13, Debbie had quickly weakened back to a category 1 hurricane over the central Atlantic and turned westward. Debbie maintained category 1 intensity as it accelerated towards the Azores and later Europe. Early on September 16, Debbie made landfall in western Ireland, in County Mayo, before transitioning in an extratropical cyclone hours later. The remnants of Debbie persisted until September 19 where they were last noted over Russia.
