A Cape Verde-type storm forming from a tropical wave in late September, Joyce headed generally westward and eventually intensified into a hurricane. As it neared the southern Windward Islands, it entrained dry air and weakened as it passed over the island chain. It then degenerated into an open wave, which was not anticipated by the National Hurricane Center.
