The purpose of this book is to provide information on career development in the tourism industry. As tourism is still an emerging profession, careers have yet to be clearly defined and career paths are not easily identifiable. It is therefore useful to explore the issues which are important for those who are currently in the tourism workforce and for those who plan to undertake careers in tourism. It is clear that the role of formal education and on-the-job training is important and the need to change job, organisation, industry or geographical location is also influential on the development of a career in tourism. It is suggested that careers in tourism are influenced by a variety of mentoring relationships and that although structured mentorship programs appear to be unavailable to many in the tourism industry, mentorship in the form of informal and networking relationships assists career development.
