Air Chief Marshal Sir Graham Eric Stirrup GCB, AFC, FRAeS, FCMI, RAF, usually referred to as Sir Jock Stirrup, is a senior Royal Air Force commander and currently the Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces. Stirrup is due to relinquish his post in October 2010 — earlier than expected — after having it extended by the previous government from 2009 to 2011. As a junior officer he was a fast jet pilot, seeing action in the Dhofar War. Later in his career, Stirrup commanded No. 2 Squadron and RAF Marham. After several senior air force appointments, Stirrup was made the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Strike Command and during this time he served as the first commander of British forces engaged in fighting the Taliban
