Previously, he was a member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 6th district (portions of Montgomery County). He also previously served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009 and Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009. He was elected Ohio Secretary of State on November 2, 2010, defeating Democratic candidate, Franklin County, Ohio Clerk of Courts Maryellen O`Shaughnessy.
