Went is a retired United States Marine Corps four-star general. His final assignment was as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and Chief of Staff. He retired in 1990 after 38 years of service. Joseph J. Went was born in New Milford, Connecticut on 16 September 1930. In 1953, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut. He received a master’s degree in Business Administration from George Washington University in 1963, and graduated with distinction from the Naval War College in June 1972.
