High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Dame Kathleen Mary Kenyon (5 January 1906 – 24 August 1978), was a leading archaeologist of Neolithic culture in the Fertile Crescent. She is best known for her excavations in Jericho in 1952- 1958. Kathleen Kenyon was the eldest daughter of Sir Frederic Kenyon, a Bible scholar and later director of the British Museum. She studied at St Paul's Girls' School, read history at Somerville College, Oxford, England, and became the first woman president of the Oxford University Archaeological Society. In 1962, Kenyon was appointed Principal of St. Hugh's College, Oxford. On her retirement in 1973, she was appointed a DBE. Kenyon never married
