The scandal began when, despite strict censorship, it was revealed two of the hijackers had been killed after being captured alive. In 1985 a senior Israeli army general was acquitted of charges related to the deaths. It then became know that members of the GSS, Israel's internal security service, had been involved in a conspiracy to implicate the general and to conceal who gave the order that the prisoners be killed. In 1986 Israel's Attorney General was forced to resign after he refused to call off an investigation into the GSS's role in the affair.
