The station is located in the southern part of Hougang New Town with a neighbourhood mall known as Heartland Mall, the former Hougang South Bus Interchange in its vicinity. With the opening of the station, the former bus interchange ceased operations in February 2004 and its services were transferred to Hougang Central Bus Interchange.
