High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria making up 10% of the country's population. Most of them are Sunni Muslims; there are also Yazidi Kurds in Syria. A very small number are Christians and Alawis. They face routine discrimination and harrasssment by the Syrian government. The majority of Kurds in Syria are really Turkish Kurds who came from Turkey to Syria in the 1920s. Considering that the State department and CIA did not acknowledge the existence of the Kurds in Syria in 1970s and 1980s, Syrian government officially does not acknowledge the existence of Kurds in Syria, and lack of transparent census in Syria; it would be difficult to predicate the true and accurate percentage. However, according to Kurdish sources there are about 12-15% or 1.2 million in Al Hasakahand 1 000 000 un derka hamko, .2 in Al raqqa, 1 million in Efrin and Aleppo, .3 million in Kobani, and .5 million in Damascus. According to Kurdistan National Assembly of Syria, Kurds in Syria make-up about 15-20%.
