Five great novels of Dostoevsky, The Adolescent is the penultimate, and also the least known. Yet it has a magnificent subject, a wealth of topics, a solid fictional technique. The subject: the passage to adulthood with an ambitious young man, miserable, greedy and the conflict between father and son. Themes: the child without happiness, strong man, money, the West, the future of Russia, socialism, the future society, the revolutionary movement, and even, as the adoptive father of hero, the saint of modern times: faith wins a victory over the thought disorder. Here we recognize the universe of Dostoyevsky. The technique is that of the adventure novel, the detective novel by Alexandre Dumas or Eugene Sue. The teenager should experience a resurrection, and regain its place among the greatest.
