Originally known under the moniker "Burn the Priest", the band was founded in 1990 by Chris Adler, John Campbell and Mark Morton. In 1997, Burn the Priest released two split 7-inches with ZED and Agents of Satan. The next year, the band issued a compilation CD of singles and other one-off tracks titled Sevens and More issued by the now-defunct MP3.com; Followed by the self-titled full-length debut, released through Legion Records, in 1999. Shortly after the self-titled`s debut release, the band change its name to "Lamb of God" and signed a record deal with Prosthetic Records. The group`s next album, New American Gospel, was released in 2000. Produced by Devin Townsend, 2003`s As the Palaces Burn was critically acclaimed, with the Revolver magazine award it as "Album of the Year." However, the album was not a commercial success and entered only for the Top Heatseekers chart, peaking at #17.
