Le Tigre was formed in 1998 by Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning. The band's self-titled debut album was released in October 1999. In 2000, Benning left the group to pursue a career as a film director. She was replaced by JD Samson on Le Tigre's second album Feminist Sweepstakes. Released in October 2001, the album featured political lyrics and reached number forty-three on the United States Billboard Independent Albums chart.
