In Liberia, violence is a habit, a customary disposition and “cultural liability.” Liberia’s violence posits “cultural dishonesty”: Liberians’ habitual tendency to preach but fail to live as they preach. Cultural dishonesty there is concisely conceived and manifested in government, in schools and the society at large. One of the principal victims of Liberia’s dishonesty is women and girls. This was demonstrated during the civil war when women and girls were mercilessly raped, killed and suffered at the hands of violent men. This book is an effort to establish academic records on women and girls in Liberia. I interviewed four Liberian women from the four predominant social groups exiled to the United State who, in the eyes of most Liberians, were instrumental in the civil war. The women’s experiences were not bread and butter but butchering and bloodshed. While those interested in Liberian and African studies would find this book meaningful, principally, it is written for those interested in social justice, for women’s rights, for Liberians, for Africans and as a text in feminist courses at colleges and universities.
