While the setting is largely futuristic, many of the buildings and dress styles are reminiscent of France in the 19th century. Gankutsuou shares the same basic plot as Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. However, in the Gankutsuou, there is a greater focus on Albert Morcerf and his friends as opposed to the book`s focus on the Count.
