Low-temperature oxidation (below 1000K) of hydrocarbon fuels is a complex process. It exhibits negative temperature coefficient behavior where overall reactivity decreases with increasing temperature. It is necessary to understand the oxidation mechanism of fuels because of its importance in various applications such as HCCI engines. The conventional oxidation mechanism of alkanes has been greatly affected by the identification of a new concerted elimination pathway that produces alkene and hydroperoxy radical from alkylperoxy. This pathway reduces the chain branching via the conventional route of alkylperoxy isomerization. This leaves us with the quest for the new chain-branching pathways. This study focuses on the ethane oxidation because it is absolutely necessary to understand it for modeling of higher hydrocarbons and “real” fuels. Complex analysis methods were used to treat the chemically activated and thermally activated reactions that yield temperature as well as pressure- dependent reaction rate constants.
