High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The luffa, loofah, or lufah are tropical and subtropical vines comprising the genus Luffa, the only genus of the subtribe Luffinae. The fruit of at least two species, Luffa acutangula and Luffa aegyptiaca (Luffa cylindrica), is grown, harvested before maturity, and eaten as a vegetable, popular in Asia and Africa. In Marathi, the gourd is called as Ghosale or Dodaka. Because of the tendency of getting soft due to loss of moisture, the vegetable is aptly called Gilaka in some parts of Maharashtra. The ripe, dried fruit is also the source of the loofah or plant sponge. The Luffa acutangula is commonly known as ridged gourd and is called Tauri in Urdu, "bhol" in Assamese, si1gua1 in Mandarin Chinese, Turai or Tori in Hindi, parteek in Nepali, Jhinga in Bengali, Janhi in Oriya, gisoda or turiya in Gujarati, Beera kaya) in Telugu, Heeray kayi in Kannada, peechinga in Malayalam, Dodaka or Ghosavala in Marathi, Ghosale in Konkani, Peerkankaai in Tamil.
