MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ: MNKD), based in Valencia, California, is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of therapeutic products for diseases such as diabetes and cancer. The company, while technically founded in February 1991, took its present form in 2003 as a merger of three companies each owned by Alfred Mann, and so named after its founder in an attempt at humor. One of the companies, Pharmaceutical Discovery, had been purchased in 2001 from Solomon Steiner, and with that purchase Mannkind acquired the Technosphere molecule and Medtone Inhaler upon which was developed its lead product, Afrezza (inhalable insulin), which is currently under FDA review.[1] Alfred Mann is chairman of the board and chief executive officer. He has a substantial amount of his personal wealth, approximately nine hundred million dollars, invested in Mannkind.
