In 4th-9th grade, students compete within their own grade. In 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, students compete within all of the grades mentioned. The West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics are avid supporters of Math Field Day, and created it to spur students' curiosity in mathematics.
